Puppet opera”  has been documented in Sicily since the first decades of the 9th century, and may date back as far as the 5th century B.C. In the Middle Ages, Sicilian puppetry enjoyed extraordinary success. Palermo alone had a small theatre in every district where the public tenaciously followed the nightly performances.

The most important of these told about the legendary “Carolingian Cycle” (or the Matter of France) articulated from scene to scene by the characteristic sound of the barrel organ. The theatre area was surrounded by painters, sculptors, arms builders, etc., whose works also influenced traditional Sicilian arts.

After a crisis brought by the advent of television, today this form of theatrical performance is reborn. Not by chance, UNESCO has selected, from 32 candidates, the Sicilian “puppet opera” as a “Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity”.

The master puppeteer of Theatre-Arte Cuticchio company, Girolamo Cuticchio, is praised for the over 60 years of activity and is today the oldest master puppeteer in Italy. www.teatroarte-cuticchio.com.
