Thailand’s Beachside Arts Capital

Hua Hin is a popular resort city on the Western shore of the Gulf of Thailand, about 200 kilometers (120 miles) south and east of Bangkok, the country’s capital and chief metropolis. Beginning in the 1920s, Hua Hin became the very first beach resort in Thailand, and today it occupies a special place in the configuration of the country’s tourist and resort destinations.

Hua Hin has long been popular as a weekend and holiday getaway from Bangkok, as a 2nd home and winter holiday spot for visitors for visitors from other countries, particularly Northern Europe. As such, it enjoys a varied clientele of Thai holiday-makers and international tourists and residents. The shores and hills around Hua Hin are studded with world-class and mid-range resorts and a full range of holiday, seasonal, and full-time residences.  Hua Hin has long enjoyed a reputation of sophistication and class, and is popular with families and upscale travelers.

Recent improvements in the roads system linking Hua Hin have made the town even more popular and accessible as a weekend destination for Bangkokians. At the this point, the town has taken on the aspect of something of an outlier for the metropolis, including important elements of the capital’s vibrant performing arts scene.

In late 2009 and 2010, Hua Hin’s arts and entertainment scene took huge steps forward with the opening of innovative arts complexes that include Patravadi’s Vic Hua Hin Theatre and High School, Cicada Market, and the highly successful Plearnwan Vintage Village. Together with existing Hua Hin institutions such as Baan Sillapin Artist Village, the 9-year old Hua Hin Jazz Festival and scenes like the very active high-season music jams, Hua Hin and its surrounding communities have catapulted forward to become arguably the leading performing and fine arts center of Thailand’s coastal regions
